The Apple Tree in London hasn't even been open a year, and it continues to go from strength to strength expanding their offering and holding more variety for LGBTQ+ people in the capital. Tonight was another milestone occurred tonight with the launch of their new small plates food menu. You may have eaten at The Apple Tree previously, but up until today the food was just delivered from a plant-based restaurant nearby. The Apple Tree has a new chef, Steve Wilson, who has created an eye-catching, mouth-watering menu of small plates, perfect for a light meal or for sharing with friends.
In keeping with the strong interest in plant-based and vegetarian food within the queer community, the menu is primarily plant-based, with a couple of meat options from ethical suppliers. In a reversal of traditional menus, The Apple Tree are offering a wider range of choices for vegans and vegetarians, while not excluding meat-eating friends. With the new menu they include the variety and tastiness of non-meat dishes alongside the meat and dairy options which are thoughtfully sourced from higher welfare suppliers: Albion Fine Foods and Sutton Hoo Chicken.
We tried a good selection of their menu including the Brave Potatoes, Jack Fruit and Avocado slider; and our top 3 were (left to right):
- Cobnut Korma
Pumpkin and spinach in a spiced roast hazelnut cream with wild rice and tomoato sambal
- Truffled Triple Mushroom Croquettes
Porcini, shitake and chestnut mushrooms and truffle croquettes with a homemade aioli dip
- Creme brûlée
The menu is a very good balance of diverse tastes, and allows you to try new things that you might not normally have. It also works no matter how hungry you might be - just change the number of plates you choose! Sadly we couldn't try everything, but that just means an excuse to go back again with friends for another meal!
You have a choice of eating on the ground floor with more of a bar feel and background music, or there is also the upstairs function room for a quieter meal, perfect for eating and chatting with friends.
