The clitoris (and it won't run away)

How have you all got on in the last fortnight with getting aquainted with your vulva? Can you see it when you close your eyes? Have you named it? The second question is optional but the first one is important! Seriously, it isn’t healthy to approach your vulva without knowing it or appreciating it. If you think that your vulva is still ugly, you can’t move on to the next bit of working with it to get you some great orgasms.

Now that you know your vulva, it is time to understand how it works in a bit more detail!

The main show for a lot of us is the clitoris. The clitoris is found at the top and in the middle of your labia and is usually covered with what is the clitoral hood. The tip of the clitoris is extremely sensitive and the hood keeps it a little bit protected. I’m sure a lot of you will agree with me when I say that touching the tip of the clitoris can be intense or too much. Because of this, this is why it’s good to massage around the clit when you get started instead.

I’m going to let you in on a secret which should never have been a secret to begin with – what you know as the clitoris – that little pea sized thing under the hood – is literally the tip of the iceberg. The clitoris is so much bigger than that! Here is an image of what the clitoris looks like in its entirety:

Clit drawing by Dinah VaginaThis particular image was created by dinahvagina, she is a ceramicist in Camarthen, West Wales who currently focuses her exhibitions on vaginas. She created an image based on the clitoris and through showing it at exhibitions aims to educate people on the amazingness of the clitoris. Visit http://www.dinahvagina.com/ to see more of her work. I love attending her exhibitions!

As you can see from the image, this doesn’t look like the clitoris we know. Most of what you see is actually inside us, and it is mostly made of erectile tissue. There are 15,000 nerve endings in the whole of our clitoris but if we only stimulate the little pea bit, you can only guess how fewer nerve endings we stimulate because of this. A lot of the clitoris is made of erectile tissue, and as much as I am loathe to compare us to men, our genitals aren’t actually that different. It is just packaged a little differently.

We have the clitoral legs, or Crura Clitoris, which are the thinner bits on the outside. Almost like an inverted ‘V’. Inside of the clitoral legs are what is called the ‘Bulb of Vestibule’ and/or Corpus Cavernosum, which are the bigger bulby bits that surround the urethral opening (where our wee comes out of). The clitoris we know – the pea shape, or the ‘button’ is called the Glans Clitoris. All of these bits are made of erectile tissue. Have you experienced swelling in your labia when you’ve been highly aroused? This is why – the whole of your clitoris is erect!

I harp on at everyone about making sure that they massage their labia as well as their ‘Glans Clitoris’ beause behind your lips is all of this lovely erectile tissue ready to go!

Here’s an interesting fact for you – it takes women, on average, 40 minutes to become fully engorged, so the longer your foreplay is, the more erect you will become.

Over the next fortnight I want you to absorb this information and think about the power you hold, as a woman, within you, and I invite you to get all smug about it too J

In the next article I have one more thing to cover before we get into the art of actual masturbating.

Rhiannon from That's the SpotRhiannon owns a sex toy consultancy business called That's the Spot.

As a person who writes and talks about sex every day, she needs to remind herself, constantly, that not everybody can talk about it as freely as she can.

At Ultimate Planet we asked Rhiannon to write for us because although LBQ women are generally better at discussing ‘vagina stuff’; this isn't always the case - and there are always new people coming out who don't get decent sex education.

MAINTAINING A SAFE SPACE

These are articles may not be for everyone. There are many women out there who are confident about their body and sex. We salute you! We ask that you please not forget that not all women are as lucky as you are. Please allow this to remain a safe space and for women to feel able to click on the link and learn; to ask questions and to interact.
