Self Testing

Now the UK is leading the world in the use of HIV self-testing, the tests themselves can be done discreetly, accurately and instantly.

In the UK one in every five people who have HIV are unaware of their status, in some areas this is even higher. Consequently, they unknowingly transmit the majority of new infections and do not access treatment, impacting their own health and life expectancy.

Brigette Bard founder and CEO of BioSure, a UK company who launched the UK’s first and only HIV self test, says:

“The BioSure HIV Self-Test empowers people to discreetly test themselves when it is convenient to them and in a place where they feel comfortable. What’s more, we passionately believe that we can help to reduce HIV infection rates. So it’s really important that we raise awareness and get people to understand how necessary it is to test and to test regularly if they know they may have put themselves at risk. Having role models to champion the cause is exactly what is needed to ensure HIV testing is seen as something anyone can do and everyone should do."

Key Facts about HIV/AIDS:

  • Over 100,000 people in the UK are living with HIV. With treatment the condition can be managed and patients lead long and healthy lives.
  • HIV/AIDS is the number one killer globally of women of child-bearing age.
  • The United Nations has identified a path to eradicate HIV from the planet by 2050: 90/90/90. In order for this to happen, 90% of people living with HIV need to be diagnosed. Self-testing is a crucial part of reaching this first milestone.
  • BioSure has been praised as the fastest and easiest self-test available in the world and is the only approved self-test available in the UK.
