Recently, we had the amazing news that out athletes Tom Daley and Mathew Mitcham won silver and gold in the same Commonwealth games Diving competition.
I can’t say that I am surprised by this.
I function much better in my job because I am myself whole-heartedly; I can put my life lessons and experiences into my job and that makes me a better all round person.
I don’t have to invest a lot of time and energy fabricating weekend stories where I have to avoid gender, location or event.
I don’t have to avoid talking about my partner in case I slip up. All that energy is available as I can talk openly about whatever I want without worrying about what might be thought.
I am out at work, at home, in life – in fact I now could never have it any other way. I like that I know myself, and that everyone knows me. In fact I take that lesson and I try to make my community a better place, the world a more tolerant place and I lead by example in everything I do.
So of course, if you are an out athlete, you can put 100% of yourself into your craft, and you will reap the rewards.
Congratulations and hopefully this will lead the way to even more elite sports personalities following the lead of the brave athletes that have taken the first plunge!
