Cressida stirs up an Old Fashioned

Warm yourself from the inside out with the classic old fashioned. This Bourbon based drink originated in the 1920’s during the prohibition. A mix of sweet and savoury that brings warmth which makes this drink so appealing in the winter months. This is also the very cocktail that ignited my passion for drinks and made me start my career as a Mixologist in the hospitality industry.

INGREDIENTS

  • Brown Sugar
  • Makers Mark Bourbon (although you can use any Bourbon)
  • Angostura Bitter (you can pick this up in any off licence or large super market)
  • Soda Water
  • Orange Peel
  • Cubed Ice
  • A short Rocks glass

The Old FashionedStart by taking a classic rocks glass (short whiskey glass) and place two tea spoons of brown sugar in the bottom of the glass.

Put three drops of Angostura Bitters in the brown sugar, then a tiny splash of soda water. Take a spoon and mix all three ingredients together until you create a small sugary foam.

Then you add two ice cubes and pour 12.5 ml of makers mark in the drink, stir twenty to the left and twenty to the right. Continue this process of adding two ice cubes, 12.5 ml of Makers Mark and stirring three more times.

Finish with a garnish of orange peel and squeeze the outer skin of the orange peel over the glass to extract the orange bitters. Then proceed to rub the outer peel around the rim of the glass. Place the orange peel inside the glass ready to serve.
